Mr. Bertram

Last updated 17 October 2026
Mr. Bertram teaches etiquette, wine, dress and the canon in a few minutes a day. This page sets out
what the app keeps, where it is kept, who handles it, and how to have it removed.
What is kept, and why
- Your account. If you sign in with Apple we receive an email address. If you chose
Hide My Email, we receive only Apple's relay address. It identifies your account and is not used
for marketing.
- What you tell him. The first name he calls you by, your city and time zone, the
subjects you chose, and the occasions you add (a dinner, an interview, a wedding, with its date and
any notes you write).
- Your progress. Lessons finished, the answers you gave, the cards due for review,
your placements, your levels and your Canon list. This is what lets the app pick up where you left
off on another phone.
- Your conversations with Bertram. The questions you ask and his replies, and a short
list of things he has been told to remember (your jacket size, say, or that you prefer red). You
can read and delete that list in the app, under You → What he remembers.
- Your membership. Whether you are a member, on trial, or neither, and when it renews.
Payment is handled entirely by Apple; we never see your card.
Before you sign in, everything stays on your phone. Nothing is sent anywhere until you create an
account.
Who handles it
- Supabase hosts the database and the server that the app talks to.
- Anthropic writes Bertram's replies. When you ask him something, your question, the
recent conversation and the relevant lesson are sent to Anthropic's API to compose the answer.
Anthropic does not use API requests to train its models.
- Apple handles sign-in and payments.
Each acts as a service provider. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with anyone else.
What is not done
- No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
- No tracking across other apps or websites.
- No third-party analytics services.
Notifications
If you allow them, the daily reminder, last call and the Sunday briefing are scheduled on your phone.
You can turn each off in the app, under You → Notifications.
Removing your data
In the app, You → Account → Close the account deletes your account and everything the server holds
about it. Deleting the app removes what is on your phone. If you would rather ask, write to the address
below and it will be done within 30 days.
Age
The app is written for adults. Some lessons concern wine and spirits, and it is not directed at
children.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the app will say so before the change takes effect.
